What began as an anxious first off-road trip through Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest unexpectedly became a life-changing creative journey for Bella Sparks, who never imagined a Jeep would spark her path to becoming a children’s author.

From Nervous Beginner to Confident Adventurer

Sparks’ introduction to off-roading wasn’t easy. Her first major trail ride left her frightened, but determined to push forward. After purchasing a Jeep with her husband in November 2023, the couple began exploring off-road parks, joining Jeep clubs, and even completing a safety course together.

Over time, the experience became less intimidating — and more empowering. Sparks found not just adventure, but a welcoming community that helped her grow more confident behind the wheel and beyond it.

A Lifelong Writing Dream Finds Its Spark

Although Sparks had long wanted to write a children’s book, inspiration didn’t strike immediately. A graduate of Washington University with a degree in industrial psychology, she had previously taken a memoir-writing class — an experience she described as transformative.

She continues to work on a memoir, but the idea of creating a children’s story lingered quietly until her Jeep adventures gave her the missing piece. As she spent more time off-roading, the vehicle began to feel like a character with its own personality.

How Sparky Makes Friends Came to Life

The story centers on Sparky, a Jeep that embarks on an off-road journey alongside a new friend, Phoenix. The narrative explores themes of friendship, bravery, emotional openness, and embracing differences.

According to Sparks, the message is simple but powerful: friends support each other through challenges — whether that means muddy trails, tough moments, or fears along the way. The book emphasizes communication, teamwork, and facing obstacles together rather than alone.

Bringing the Story to the Page

Sparks partnered with Panda Pro Publishing to bring Sparky’s story to life. She initially hoped to collaborate with a young illustrator, inspired by how Jeep clubs often include children and families in off-road events.

She believes it’s important for kids to understand that feeling scared is normal — and that trying something new, even when it’s uncomfortable, can lead to growth and confidence.

Community Roots and Growing Local Support

Sparks has already begun sharing Sparky’s story beyond the page. During a holiday parade in Breckenridge Hills, Sparky even helped escort Santa — an experience that inspired Sparks to write a Christmas-themed installment the same night.

She is now reaching out to schools and libraries in Edwardsville, Troy, and surrounding areas to donate books and organize readings, hoping children can meet Sparky in person and connect with the character they’ve read about.

What’s Next for Sparky?

The Sparky series is just getting started. Sparks has five books planned, each reflecting her real-life off-roading experiences and the friendships she’s built along the way. A standalone children’s activity book is also in development.

Currently, Sparky Makes Friends is available on Amazon, with plans to expand distribution and donate copies to local schools and libraries.

Looking ahead, Sparks also hopes to launch a behind-the-scenes podcast aimed at adults, exploring Jeep culture, off-roading, and the deeper meaning adventure holds in her life.
