Experience the Extraordinary in Flesh by David Szalay<\/span><\/h1>\n

British-Hungarian novelist David Szalay has been awarded the 2025 Booker Prize for his novel Flesh, which the judges hailed as \u201cextraordinary\u201d and \u201ca very special book.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flesh follows the life of a complex, emotionally distant man as he moves through contrasting worlds \u2014 from a modest housing estate in Hungary to the elite social circles of<\/span> London\u2019s wealthy class.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roddy Doyle, chair of the Booker judging panel, praised the book\u2019s uniqueness, saying, \u201cWhat we particularly admired about Flesh was its singularity.<\/span> It\u2019s unlike any other novel. It\u2019s dark, but a joy to read.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The judging panel also included actress Sarah Jessica Parker. At the same time, pop stars Dua Lipa and Stormzy have both publicly supported the novel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to the BBC after his win, Szalay admitted he was \u201ca bit dazed\u201d by the announcement.<\/span> \u201cI convinced myself I wouldn\u2019t win, just to get through the night calmly.<\/span> Now I need time to process it \u2014 but it\u2019s fantastic, of course,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the ceremony in London, Stormzy\u2019s reading of an excerpt from the book was featured in a short film. Dua Lipa \u2014 who selected Flesh for her book club<\/span> last month \u2014 described it as \u201ca tense and gripping read.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The novel has earned widespread critical acclaim. <\/span>The Sunday Times praised Szalay for his ability to explore what it is to be alive.<\/span> The Guardian hailed it as “a brilliantly sparse portrait of a person.” The character Istvan is able to portray the “three stages” of modern man.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judge Roddy Doyle highlighted the author\u2019s minimalist approach: \u201cWe were impressed by how much conveyed with so little. The white space, the silence \u2014 even grief expressed through a few blank pages.<\/span> The dialogue, and its absence, are both remarkable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Booker Prize Foundation, Flesh serves as \u201ca meditation on class, power, intimacy, migration, and masculinity.\u201d It offers \u201ca compelling portrait of one man and the experiences that<\/span> echo throughout his life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After more than five hours of deliberation, the judges unanimously selected Flesh as the winner.<\/span> Gaby Wood, chief executive of the foundation, described the novel as \u201cspare, disciplined, urgent, honest, and heartbreaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith Flesh, Szalay has broken new ground,\u201d Wood added.<\/span> \u201cHe has written with unflinching commitment for years, and this win feels richly deserved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flesh marks Szalay\u2019s sixth novel. <\/span>He was previously shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2016 for All That Man Is, another exploration of masculinity.<\/span> The 2025 prize earns him \u00a350,000.<\/span><\/p>\n
