After the passing of her parents, <\/span>Jan Cress Dondi<\/b> discovered hundreds of wartime letters that opened a window into her family\u2019s past\u2014specifically the service of her father and uncle in the <\/span>U.S. Army Air Corps<\/b> during World War II. What began as a personal exploration grew into a detailed research journey that ultimately became <\/span>The Navigator\u2019s Letter<\/i><\/b><\/a>, a nonfiction book set to be published by <\/span>Hachette Book Group<\/b> in <\/span>February 2026<\/b> and now available for preorder.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Life Shaped by Curiosity and Determination<\/span><\/h2>\n

Born in <\/span>Hillsboro, Illinois<\/b>, and raised in <\/span>Atlanta<\/b>, Dondi attended <\/span>Mercer University<\/b> from 1973\u201375 before completing her bachelor\u2019s degree at the <\/span>University of Georgia<\/b> in 1977. Her early career took her from retail in Florida to Alaska, where she pivoted to paralegal work and built a <\/span>30-year career in trial litigation<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A work assignment in Texas brought her back into contact with her former college sweetheart, <\/span>Beda Dondi<\/b>, whom she later married. The couple eventually settled in Fort Lauderdale and raised two daughters; today, they enjoy time with their four grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transforming Family Letters Into a Historical Narrative<\/span><\/h2>\n

Following retirement, Dondi turned her attention to family history. She had grown up hearing her father Bob\u2019s stories of WWII and recorded his accounts when he was about 70\u2014footage that became foundational to her research.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tragedy struck several years later when Dondi lost her mother, sister, and niece to breast cancer. During that difficult period, the wartime letters from her father and her uncle, <\/span>John B.<\/b>, became an emotional anchor and a starting point for a deeper investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is every letter that sends me searching for answers,” Dondi said. \u201cIt was important to me to learn what these two men experienced daily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Parallel Lives in the Air Corps<\/span><\/h2>\n

Although not related by blood, Bob and John B. shared remarkable similarities. Both grew up in the same town, joined the <\/span>Army Air Corps<\/b>, became <\/span>B-24 navigators<\/b>, and were sent to the European theatre. Each flew over <\/span>Ploesti, Romania<\/b>, a heavily defended Nazi oil hub, and both were shot down and declared missing during their service.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book follows the U.S. campaign to cripple Nazi Germany\u2019s oil supply, beginning with <\/span>Operation Tidal Wave<\/b> in 1943\u2014a perilous low-altitude bombing run over Ploesti that cost more than half the American aircraft involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dondi also explores the high-altitude raids that followed and culminated with <\/span>Operation Reunion<\/b>, the largest air evacuation in history, which rescued <\/span>1,162 prisoners of war<\/b> and brought them to safety in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through personal accounts, pilot logs, veterans\u2019 testimonies, and international archives, Dondi reconstructs the severe challenges airmen faced: freezing temperatures, flak bursts, enemy fighters, and the emotional weight of leaving loved ones behind.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Story Built From Memoirs, Archives, and Global Research<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many sections of the book draw from Bob\u2019s unfinished memoirs, including a memorable chapter about a staged \u201cemergency landing\u201d at the Chicago Midway airfield that allowed the crew to reunite briefly with their families before deployment.<\/span><\/p>\n
