Diane Roback to Transition to Editor-at-Large Role at Publishers Weekly<\/span><\/h1>\n

Diane Roback will step down from her position as senior vice president and children\u2019s book editor at <\/span>Publishers Weekly<\/span><\/i> on March 2, 2026. She will remain with the publication in a new capacity as editor-at-large. Roback has led <\/span>PW<\/span><\/i>\u2019s children\u2019s book coverage since 1986, when she was appointed by then editor-in-chief John Baker, succeeding Jean F. Mercier after working closely with her on children\u2019s features.<\/span><\/p>\n

Industry Leaders Praise Roback\u2019s Lasting Impact<\/span><\/h2>\n

“Diane is truly a legend,” said Jonathan Segura, editorial director at Publishers Weekly. \u201cHer influence on <\/span>PW<\/span><\/i> and the publishing industry cannot be overstated. We\u2019re fortunate she\u2019ll continue contributing as editor-at-large, and she has also built an exceptional editorial team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Four Decades of Transforming Children\u2019s Book Coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n

Over her 40-year career at <\/span>PW<\/span><\/i>, Roback reshaped how children\u2019s publishing was reported and reviewed. In 1988, she launched the first national children\u2019s bestseller list. She later established a dedicated children\u2019s reviews department, modeled on the magazine\u2019s adult book review system and supported by freelance reviewers nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognizing the need for digital coverage, Roback introduced the <\/span>Children\u2019s Bookshelf<\/span><\/i> newsletter in 2005. The publication expanded to twice-weekly issues in 2012 and now reaches more than 47,000 subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elevating Children\u2019s Publishing as a Major Industry Sector<\/span><\/h2>\n

As children\u2019s publishing evolved from a secondary focus into a powerhouse category, <\/span>PW<\/span><\/i>\u2019s coverage grew alongside it. Roback\u2019s reporting played a key role in legitimizing the sector within the broader publishing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDiane helped establish children\u2019s publishing as a serious business,\u201d said Barbara Marcus, former president and publisher of Random House Children\u2019s Books. \u201cShe was a friend to children\u2019s publishers all over the world and respected by them as she was always fair, reasonable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Editorial Leadership Changes at Publishers Weekly<\/span><\/h2>\n

Beginning in March, Roback will work at <\/span>PW<\/span><\/i> two days a week. Following her transition, senior editor Emma Kantor will take on the role of children\u2019s news editor. It oversees children\u2019s book news and features across print and digital platforms. Amanda Bruns will step into the position of associate reviews director for children\u2019s books. It will continue managing daily review operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kantor will report to news director Kerensa Cadenas, while Bruns will report to reviews director David Adams.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roback Reflects on a Historic Career<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201c<\/span>Publishers Weekly<\/span><\/i> has a deep legacy in children\u2019s books, dating back to Frederic Melcher\u2019s role in launching the Newbery and Caldecott Medals and cofounding Children\u2019s Book Week,\u201d Roback said. \u201cIt has been an honor to contribute to that tradition and to witness the remarkable growth of children\u2019s publishing over the past four decades.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
