Barcelona Showcases Its Creative and Publishing Strength at the 39th Guadalajara Book Fair

Barcelona Shines as Guest City at Guadalajara Book Fair

Barcelona is set to take center stage as the Guest City of Honour at the 39th Guadalajara International Book Fair, running from Saturday, November 29, to December 7.

Event Significance in Latin America

Recognized as one of the most significant cultural events in Latin America. One of the largest book fairs in the world. The festival will welcome Barcelona with a rich and diverse cultural program. Beyond its expansive literary offerings. The Catalan capital will showcase performing arts, music, film, design, gastronomy, scientific dialogue, and thought-provoking discussions.

Curated Program and Key Figures

Curated by journalist Anna Guitart, the program positions Barcelona as a global hub of culture and literature while emphasizing its long-standing connection with Mexico and Latin America. This year’s theme, “The Flowers Will Come”, inspired by a story from Mercè Rodoreda, accompanies the city’s delegation of nearly seventy contemporary Catalan and Barcelona-based authors, representing a wide range of genres and perspectives.

Notable Authors and Musicians

Notable figures include celebrated writer Eduardo Mendoza, who will inaugurate the literary forum, and iconic musician Joan Manuel Serrat, who is set to lead a special conversation with young attendees.

Honoring Literary Icons

Each evening, the fair will honor influential literary icons, such as Carmen Balcells—the legendary agent behind the Latin American Boom—as well as Joan Brossa, Mercè Rodoreda, Ana María Matute, Montserrat Roig, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán. The program will also feature a dedicated celebration of Sant Jordi.

The Barcelona Pavilion: Espai Publicat

One of the most anticipated attractions is the Barcelona Pavilion, located in the venue’s main lobby. Designed by Fàbric and Santiago de León. The pavilion—titled “Espai publicat”—will recreate a Barcelona-style square to encourage meetings, discussions, and cultural exchange.

The installation will cover 1,000 square meters. This will include a bookstore with 10,000 titles. It is related to the city. It has a 120-seat auditorium that will host part of the professional and literary agenda.

Music and Theatrical Performances

Musical and theatrical events will enrich the schedule, with nine consecutive nights of performances at Foro FIL. The lineup will feature well-known names from Barcelona’s vibrant music scene. It including Maria Arnal, Rigoberta Bandini, Lucía Fumero, Queralt Lahoz, Love of Lesbian, Mushka, and others.
